ZIMBABWE CHAMBER OF INFORMAL ECONOMY ASSOCIATIONs (Matabeleland region) |
|
Zimbabwe chamber of informal Economy Associations is a national organization representing informal traders associations in Zimbabwe.
It was formed in direct response to the collapsing of formal set up in the Zimbabwean economy due to a combination of factors. Company closures and retrenchments of workers resulted in the labour market becoming flooded with job seekers of which the economy could not absorb due to lack of employment creation opportunities. This however resulted in a rapid expansion in the informal economy which the infrastructure, government instruments and public institutions was ill prepared to deal with thus was unable to address giving rise to new challenges. It is against this background that informal business associations came together in 2002 to come up with an apex body to complement other stakeholders such as government, business (Emcoz) and labour (ZCTU) to find ways and means to improve conditions for easy access to social services, infrastructure and national resources by this sector. It was imperative for the body to be relevant and up to the task therefore in its creation gender sensitivity and all embracing non-discriminatory and non- partisan policies were adopted. This has made this body grow from strength to strength currently represented in the whole country through chapters and regional organs both in cities, towns and rural areas. Each chapter has autonomy of operations from the head office to run its own separate development programs. We as a Bulawayo chapter in the Matabeleland Region have taken a leading role in establishing an office, a website and executive office run by a Director. Over the years we have built up relations with other organizations at international level, national level and regional level to share information and solidarity and support.
